About The Event
Salamanders have long been an important model system for embryology, stem cell and regenerative biology, and vision physiology. Because they are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions, salamanders are also important models for ecology, evolution, and behavior, especially as it relates to global change. Family Plethodontidae is the largest family of salamanders and accounts for the high diversity of salamanders found in the United States. These terrestrial amphibians have many unique traits including a massive genome, direct development, loss of lungs, and a highly specialized tongue skeleton for prey capture. This course will provide an overview of everything one might need to know to set up and run a laboratory facility for salamanders. The information given is designed to teach attendees how to maintain a healthy colony, strengthen animal husbandry know-how, and what to do in case of emergency for this particular group of salamanders.
